Thoughts From A Social Worker on The Human Experience

The following is an excerpt from a letter written by a woman who recently viewed The Human Experience:

I am writing to tell you I was deeply moved by watching “The Human Experience”. I only just came across your film a couple of weeks ago and upon viewing the trailer, decided it was something important for me to see. Stumbling across your film now could not have been timelier. The steady stream of tears that rolled down my cheeks as I watched your journey was indicative to me that I very much needed to hear your message.

I believe when we speak with our hearts, other hearts respond to our message. You most definitely speak with and from your heart. I was struck by your courage ~ to risk being open and vulnerable about who you are and those things that continued to haunt you. This is a rare gift, as we are often sent the message that it is unsafe to share our truth with others. I was also impressed with your noticeable wisdom and insight ~ you clearly have a “knowing” about the world beyond your years. This was so important for me to see given that many of our youth struggle in today’s society and are treated as though they do not have something important to contribute.

In the spirit of sharing and reciprocity (and to give you some context about why your film had such an impact on me) I want to tell you a bit about my journey. I come from a broken and violent home. I grew up impoverished, surrounded by substance abuse and mental illness. I had little hope as a child but knew by the age of 11 that I did not want the life that was handed to me. After much adversity, hard work, self reflection, and perseverance, today I am in a place I never thought possible. I have a safe place to live, the best friends a girl could ever ask for, a vocation that I love, and I am privileged enough to right now be studying as a graduate student pursuing her PhD.

As a social worker, I have witnessed and heard many things. I have seen the very epitome of hope and the greatest depths of despair. It’s difficult at times, having been exposed to so much both personally and professionally to stay hopeful and remember what my own purpose is. And then a story like yours comes along and is a brilliant reminder of why I am called to do my work. Your story…your willingness to step outside of yourselves and into another’s world even for a short time reminds me that we, as human beings, are all in this together ~ no matter where we come from, no matter what we have or don’t have, no matter if we recognize we are one another’s brothers and sisters or not.

Thank you for serving as a beautiful reminder about the importance of being human. I wish you love, peace, and many blessings so that you may continue your important work of shining as beacons of light for those who need reminding that hope exists in the world and can change everything.

Grassroots Films Crashes the Super Bowl!

Our crew here at Grassroots Films is always amazed at the many ways in which The Human Experience continues inspire others. Sometimes we receive letters and emails from people who have endured great struggles in life... others have made radical changes, and some have even gone so far as to leave home and set out on their own amazing journeys. Our friends pour out their hearts and souls in their letters; they share their trials, their joys, and -- not to be forgotten -- their laughter too.

That said, we also have a sense of humor! There is a light and fun-loving side to Grassroots Films (which you will undoubtedly pick-up on if you have seen The Human Experience). We are pleased to share a little side project that we put together for Doritos' "Crash the Super: Bowl Hollywood Edition" commercial competition!

A recent letter from a volunteer in Peru, and fan of The Human Experience:

I just want to thank everyone at Grassroots Films for creating The Human Experience. I grew up in southern Jersey, but for the past three years I have been living, working and volunteering in Lima, Peru. I go back and forth every six months, with one suitcase filled with the few things that I might need. I honestly believe I would not be the person I am today if it was not for what I have experienced from living abroad. I don't have time or space to collect a ton of material things and I have learned to live that way... and at the same time, I have completely adapted to living in Peru. I have grown, matured, and prospered in that country and I have found beauty in every area that I have lived or traveled.

The Human Experience Inspires Student-Run Homeless Shelter in Philly

To the Brothers Featured in The Human Experience,

When I was in high school, I remember you visited my school in South Huntington, NY to give a short presentation promoting your documentary. Your compassionate words changed my life and truly made me understand what it means to be human. Now, four years later and a junior in college at Villanova University, I am determined to do something about the injustices and hatred that exists throughout our world.

Over the past several months, I have gotten to know many homeless people living on the streets of Philadelphia. Immersing myself in the lives of the homeless every week as my friends and I serve lunch to the hungry at a Philadelphia church has expanded my compassion tremendously. Because of this change of heart and the new relatinships that have formed, a group of Villanova students and myself have decided to open up a homeless shelter.

The Student-Run Emergency Housing Unit of Philadelphia will be the second student-run shelter in America, following in the footsteps of Harvard's shelter which has been successfully operating for 28 years. We will house approximately 30 homeless guests, serving them dinner and breakfast and offering them a warm place to sleep, showers, clothing, internet-access, and most importantly, a relationship. Our goal is to bring these 30 people out of homelessness by working with them to get stable employment and permanent housing.

Hello,

I am sure you have received thousands of emails about many of your films and the effect they've had on the viewer, and I am about to do the same.

I am not one to write in about a reaction to a film. I feel very differently about this film, however.

I am in the middle of watching The Human Experience. Never in my young life have I ever been so moved to tears (not like "oh this part is so touching- I need a Kleenex"); I'm talking about absolutely bawling my eyes out over what I'm watching -- and I'm only 30 minutes into the film.

I've never had a movie within the first half hour make me completely question how I live my life and what I take for granted. I've never been moved to actually change the way I live my life and how I see the lives of others.

Without continuing my rant any further since you've probably heard this thousands of times before, I wanted to thank the gentlemen who produced this film for a truly life-altering experience through a film alone, and how I know this will change how I will live my life from here out.

I tip my hat to those gentlemen for sharing their personal and worldly experiences with the world, and hopefully opening a few more eyes to not only other people's views of lives, but what they can do to change their perspectives and actions on such a valuable, delicate privilege that life is.

Faith: A Common Denominator

Last week, Grassroots Films' director, Charles Kinnane met a group of university students while traveling. He handed them a copy of The Human Experience and asked them to write back to him with their thoughts after viewing the film. Below, is a letter from one of the girls -- inspirational words of thanks and a common acknowledgement of faith, regardless of religion:

On the bus to Boston you handed my friends and I copy of your film and asked us to email you about our response. I watched the film with my dad and sisters, and we were all sad when it ended -- we wanted more. As a Muslim, I was watching this film and felt like the people were preaching the message of Islam without ever saying "Islam." Sounds weird, right? But I'm sure a Christian would feel the same way, or a Jew, or even a Buddhist (which is true, by the way, because this film was the topic at Interfaith Week). At a time where people are blaming religion for the problems in the world, your film proves otherwise. You showed people who outwardly have the least in life, but because of their relationship with God, they have the most in life. I just want to thank you for that. Jazak Allah khair -- which means "may God bring you all that is good" -- we believe that to be the best thing you could say to someone.

Jeff and I are back in Sydney with a week left on the human experience
tour and what an amazing experience it has been.

Today we had a few hours in the morning and afternoon to walk around
and we decided to hit up the aquarium and the wild life park.
Absolutely amazing!

We saw the duck billed platypus and some other really cool animals
that are native to Aussie.

Tonight we had another great show at the university here. Some really
great questions by the students as well as the staff. I hope our
answers were just as cool.

Tomorrow we have three shows and are looking forward to each one of them!

This really has been an amazing time and it's so incredible to see
soave people moved by the film. I am anxious to see how the rest of
this story unfolds!

To Whom This May Concern,

I'm 18 years old and am a senior in high school. I recently have seen The Human Experience and I just wanted to say that this film is the most inspiring movie I've seen. I mean that with all of my heart. I've seen it three times and each time I watch it, I pick up on something completely new and exciting.

The part of the film that really hit me was The Children's Home in Peru. The children have filled me with exhilarating inspiration and have made me realize what I want to do with the rest of my life; I want to get my nursing degree and then travel down south to help children who have been neglected or abused by their family.

I can't put into words how much it would mean to me if I could work with the kids down there. They truly are so inspirational and I want to give back to them in any way possible. Thank you and may God bless you!

The Human Experience’s leading man hops NYC subways with homeless

NEW YORK, NY – Dec 10^th, 2010: It’s rush hour, but the D train platform is dead silent, save the sound of footsteps and the slight buzz emanating from the earbuds of college kids headed downtown. Commuters are on the way home after work, school and errands, when out of the dim echo comes a voice: “What’s up New York!? Good evening everybody; how’s it going?” Heads turn and eyes flick toward the direction of the lively Brooklyn accent. “My name is Jeff. I’m not here to ask you for money tonight. Instead I want to give you something…”

At first glance, the young man looks like any other 24-year-old. He’s wrapped in his coat, put-together, and blends in with the subway crowd. Discernment poised upon the faces of commuters, the question remains: Does this seemingly All-American guy have something important to say, or is he just crazy?

Encircled by inquisitive stares, this isn’t the first time Jeffrey Azize has found himself at the center of attention. The lead protagonist of the award-winning reality-doc The Human Experience spent an entire year being followed by cameras, along with his brother Cliff. The film accompanies the brothers and their friends as they venture into the shoes of New York City’s homeless, cruise down the Peruvian coast in the company of both surfers and orphans, and trek through the jungles of Africa amid isolated Ghanaian lepers and those afflicted by AIDS -- all in search of a deeper understanding of what unites people.

Today, they’re back in New York City hopping between subway cars with the homeless and handing out DVD trailers of the film that has been heralded by theater mogul Dan Harkins as, “a multicultural sensation… a must-see.”

Azize, along with his co-stars, Michael Campo and brother Cliff have been on tour with the film, screening the Human Experience at special events and traveling the festival circuit. To date, the Human Experience has been screened in over 250 cities across the world. Brooklyn indie studio Grassroots Films confirmed today that the film, directed by Charles Kinnane, would be available in major retail outlets in the new year. Glimpses of Peru: Updates on Angela & Victor

Do you ever wonder abut Angela, Victor, and the other children from Dr. Tony's orphanage in Peru who appeared in "The Human Experience"? Where are they now? What are they up to?

Today, Grassroots Films received a letter from a New York couple inspired to volunteer at Dr. Tony's after seeing the film... and what's more, they included photos of the kids! They sure are growing up...

I so appreciate you sending me the contact information for Dr. Lazzara at the Hogar de Saint Francisco de Assis! My husband and I have recently returned from the trip to visit there. What an amazing experience. I know that Dr. Tony and the kids were really hoping to see the part of the film that focused on the time in Chaclacayo. I have attached a few photos, as Angela and Victor, two of the children featured in the film still live there.

Angela is doing well and using crutches to mobilize and has had significant surgeries on her other leg. Victor is using his prosthetic leg well. Both of these children as well as all the children in the Hogar, are truly inspirational. I feel so blessed to have been there, and am so glad that I stumbled into this film that set the wheels in motion!

Love in Action

Grassroots Films recently received a beautiful letter from someone who saw The Human Experience in Arizona. It's inspiring to read about their hope and love in action! Thank you to all who reach out to those in need. This world is a better place because of your friendship, willingness and dedication.

Thank you for this movie. I was so inspired by this movie, that after I left the theater, I called my 16 year old son, my mom and my son's girlfriend to come over my house. We made 100 sandwiches and bought bottled water and took it to downtown Phoenix, to feed the homeless. We took the time to connect with our brothers and sisters who were hungry. It was such a touching experience. One gentleman from the streets, asked my son "which organization are you with, because this is really nice." My son answered "no organization, we just wanted to come here and share." This man started to cry. Another homeless teenager was pushing his father on a wheelchair. We asked them if they would like a sandwich and some water. The father answered "You can't imagine how hungry we are, we wanted to go to the store right now, to buy food, but we hardly had enough for anything."

We have vowed to do this every weekend from this day forth. I want to someday to be able to do even more. I will find the way. Can you imagine, if more people have been inspired to act?

Production assistance, prop handling & location scouting, inter-office courier runs, assisting in web and promotional material design, transcriptions, data entry, research, filing, office duties, answering phones, social networking, Facebook & Twitter community management, web campaigning, as well as general staff assistance.

Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills and be able to answer calls and emails in a professional manner. Art Department interns should have a working knowledge of CS4 and Adobe Professional Suite. Social Networking interns should have prior experience posting on multiple network & blogging sites. All interns should be familiar with Microsoft Office.

The Grassroots Films office is located in Brooklyn and the internships are open to college students in the greater NYC area for school credit. Marketing, communications and creative business majors are encouraged to apply. You must be at least 18 years old to intern with Grassroots Films.

Jeff and I arrived in Poland this morning from Finland. It has been a really long day with many challenges lol but were keeping our sense of humor!

Anyway we arrived here in Warsaw today and had a quick look into the history of the suffering Poland endured during WWII and after. Holy smokes.... We were taken to the museum of War Hero's and took a NY tour (45 Min for the whole place). It was really something and def brought us to deeper look at the War, and with our New polish Friends, it became much more personal.

Well tomorrow we have a full day ahead of us and much to do before the showing of the film. I'll keep updating Facebook and twitter with pics and stuff.

Pepperdine University students and film industry leaders are joining forces to present REELSTORIES FILMFEST, a student-led film festival showcasing student-produced films and two award-winning feature-length documentaries. By harnessing the power of storytelling, REELSTOREIS FILMFEST presents a captivating sequence of films, challenging audience members to affect change. The first of its kind at Pepperdine, the film festival seeks to unite the Pepperdine, Malibu, and filmmaking communities. On Friday, January 22, Pepperdine invites all lovers of film to attend for an unforgettable evening.

A celebrity panel of judges, including Jonah Nolan (“The Dark Knight,” “The Prestige,” “Memento”), Randall Wallace (“Braveheart,” “The Man in the Iron Mask”), Tom Shadyac (“Bruce Almighty,” “Patch Adams”), as well as executives of Sony Pictures and Lionsgate Entertainment will be present. Today Jeff, Chuck and I, were taken to the cliffs of Kilkee and this place was truly breath taking!!

Well I have to say that this tour has really been an incredible experience! We have met so many Great people, and learned so much from all the places we visited.

Ireland

So the screenings in Wales went excellent! The people we met really made us feel at home!

The film continues to be well received on the tour.

We arrived in Ireland yesterday and Dublin so far has been amazing! Today we had an opportunity to do some sight seeing and last night we shared our first Guinness in Ireland at a local spot called grave diggers! Very cool place we even signed the guest book. So if ur ever hanging out at grave diggers in Dublin check it out!

So we are midway through the screening and its sold! Great crowd tonight.

Tomorrow were off to Limerick.

Jeff and Chuck are doing great and the Q&A's stay interesting.

A day off in Wales

Well today was our first day off on the European tour for The Human Experience. We had an opportunity to get a good look at the heart of Wales and even have some traditional welsh food that I have to say was really quite good!

Jeff, Chuck and I also visited King Edward the 1st castle which is over 800 years old. I could not believe how cool it really was! Absolutely amazing.

The tour finishes in Wales tomorrow with one more show at the university here and then its off to Ireland!

On a train on our way to Wales from the great city of London! What an incredible 4 days it has been! All the screenings were completely sold out. And in attendance were people from all walks of life, including Mrs. Cherie Blair on Friday night who we had the pleasure of meeting before the show!

I really think that we have made some life long friends here, and I am anxious to see what the future holds for Grassroots Films in London.

The Q&A went great both nights there were some really thoughtful questions from the audience. I hope that our answers were sufficient. Some of the questions and comments were so deep it was really inspiring for us.

This tour has been quite an experience for Chuck, Jeff and myself as well, and we are very grateful to be here.

Anyway we have arrived in Wales and will get a good night sleep before our first screening here tomorrow.

European Tour (London)

So we landed in London tonight! We got off the plane and took a nice car ride to our hotel which is situated in a great spot not too far from Buckinham Palace!! Very cool!

We ate, and were given a short night time tour by our friend Matt. We have 2 screenings tomorrow, one in the morning and one at night.

I hear that all the shows are Sold out! Which is really cool!

Last day in Switzerland

Here we are tonight in Wallace Switzerland, brig to be precise and we are in the process of showing the film one last time to a PACKED house!!!

The time here is around 8pm and we can honestly say that this has truly been an amazing experience.

Today we got a chance to walk around a little bit in the capitol and it was really something! The people here are really great and I think that the film has made an impact on the two thousand who have seen it here in the country!

Switzerland keeping us Busy!

It has been an excellent first few days here in Switzerland and the tour is going very well! So far we have shown the film 4 times.... And tomorrow alone will be another 4 screenings! So yes the Swiss are keeping us busy lol.

The response so far has been excellent! Young and old pack the cinema for each screening and I have to say that it is definitely humbling to witness it all.

Our guide Marten and his girlfriend Maria have been Excellent hosts and treat all of us very well! They both are fun to be with and always make it interesting. We are very happy to be guests of such wonderful people!

Tomorrow we will have to get up nice and early and drive for 2 hours to the border of Austria and switzerland where we will show the film 4 times!!!!

Well I better get some sleep. Here they call this the "Hope Tour" and I am grateful to see the film continue to inspire hope all over the world!

Engelberg Switzerland

Jeff, Chuck and I had our first screening last night here in Engelberg Switzerland. Engelberg means Angel Mountain.

The screening went great!!! We are in a small town where 5K people live deep in the mountains and we are on our way out this morning to a different part of the country.

We stayed the night in a Monastery that is over 900 years old! Absolutely incredible! The people here are very nice! And cheese is served with every meal.

Well back on the road for now. I will continue to blog and post pics through twitter and facebook as much as I can.

Well Jeff, Chuck and I have officially began the European tour! We landed in Zurich this morning at 8am local time. I have to say this is going to be a very busy trip but overall I am sure it will be very fruitful. I'll continue to update twitter and facebook with pics and status updates if your interested in following along.

Right now we are on an old train heading through the mountains into angleberg which from what I am told is very beautiful!

Chuck is sleeping, Jeff is taking in the view, and me... I'm writing this blog lol.

Wow what a screening in Wisconsin!!! Our flight was cancelled and Jeff and I had to rent a car and drive from Minnesota to Viterbo college! We made it just as 700 people were filing in.

Well the screening went really well and I have to say that the questions here were something special. It seemed like people here were really interested in the theological questions pertaining to the film. I hope that we answered them well!

Grassroots Films received another letter this week from the youth development center where The Human Experience was shown to a group of at-risk teenage boys. Many of the letters left a lasting impression, but this one in particular left an impact...

"My Experience With The Human Experience"

The Human Experience was a phenomenal movie, more so a documentary, made by a young man by the name of Jeffrey Azize. He, along with a few other friends went around the world to see life for what it really is.

To me the movie opened up my mind and heart to life. For the fact that I've always thought, 'I have the right to act the way I do, because no one knows what I've been through.' But after seeing what Jeff went through with the leper colony, and the South American kid named Victor - I noticed that they were far off worse than I am but continued to keep smile on their face. It was amazing how the leper colony was so joyful when they were cast-out by their families yet still welcomed others with open arms. Here I am thinking it's alright for me to be rude and disrespectful. Taking the abilities that I have and using them to break laws and get over on people. I feel as if I've been given a blessing but I'm taking it for granted. Especially when looking at a child like Victor who can only eat, write and walk with just one foot. Even at a young age, he doesn't allow his disabilities to become obstacles in his life.

...I don't know about other people, but I realized that I'm very fortunate and these things showed me how I take my mom and dad for granted. Seriously, I have a mother who cares, shows concern, and a father that wants to be involved... Makes me think that I'll be more appreciative of my mother and try to get to know my father before it's too late.

The Human Experience just really helped me open my eyes not only to life, but to people. So I can be more insightful, knowledgeable, grateful and appreciative for the things, people and abilities that I have. One more thing I got out of it is, that no matter how bad things are for me, there is someone worse off, and those are the ones for whom I pray for.

In September, Grassroots Films traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, where the Audubon Youth Development Center and the Louisville Youth Detention Center hosted private screenings of The Human Experience for a group of young men, ages 13 to 18. The screenings were not only a cinematic dialogue, but a cathartic transmigration for both the audience and filmmakers alike.

Upon return to Brooklyn, the letters started pouring in. We were struck by the words of these young men. Their stories - intimate, realistic and filled with both suffering and forgiveness, reveal a desire to discover the meaning in their lives...

season's 26th touring edition is the City of Glen Cove this weekend.

Arlington, and New Orleans were great!!!

We were invited to show The Human Experience in Arlington, VA to 750+ young adults who have decided to dedicate a week from their summer vacation to helping others. Talk about the real human experience. The screening was received quite well and Jeff and I hope to continue hearing from people who enjoyed the film - via Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks.

As for N'Awlins it was HOT, LOL. We were hosted by the Kappa Gamma Pi Honor Society at OLHC College, and the film again was received at the end with a standing ovation!!!! It's amazing to see how this film continues to reach into the hearts and souls of those watching. It never gets old and to have the opportunity to meet with people after the showings was GREAT!

Good things are happening. It feels great to be back in the U.S.A.!

Lead Role, Jeff Azize and Executive Producer, Joseph Campo are back in Brooklyn after having just returned from their Italian Tour of The Human Experience. The film was well-received by the groups that gathered for screenings at The North American College and Santa Croce University.

Other Highlights from Rome?

A fantastic tour into the necropolis underneath St. Peter's Basilica, some delicious dining in the Borgo district, and of course, meeting a multitude of wonderful new people... Jeff even got to shake hands with the Pope!

Hi Everyone,

Just back from a successful tour in Rome, Italy. It was quite a whirlwind of a week - but we had some great screenings!

Thanks to everyone who came out - especially our friends at the North American College and Santa Croce University. It was wonderful to meet new faces, sample some authentic Italian cuisine, and visit places in the Eternal City that we've never seen before.

It was an amazing week & we can't believe how incredible it turned out to be!

Well last night I attended the hoboken film festival in NJ, the human experience has been officially selected. Last night was really just about mingling with other film makers. I met some really cool people last night.

Tonight however the film will be screened at 8PM. I am looking forward to the reaction of the audience. Looks like there is some interesting competition lol!

A special thanks to everyone for coming out and supporting the film! Great screenings both in the Bronx last night, and in Brooklyn today! Some old faces and plenty of new made this event a memory that we at Grassroots films will never forget!

We also got some great footage so be sure to check in frequently to see the video were working on for publicity purposes, who knows, you might even be in it! Lol

It continues to amaze me the impact the Human Experience has on all people from all back rounds. We look forward to the next screening and sharing this with you!
